10 Simple Tips to Reduce Your Monthly Electricity Bill

High electricity bills shouldn't be a permanent part of your life. From the 'Phantom Load' in your living room to the way you use your fridge, these 10 simple, actionable tips will help you slash your monthly costs and make your power go further

The Rising Cost of Power

Whether you are on a prepaid meter or a monthly tariff, electricity costs in Nigeria are climbing. The good news? You don’t have to live in the dark to save money. Small changes in how you use your appliances can lead to massive savings at the end of the month.

Here are 10 tips to help you take control of your meter.

1. Switch to LED Lighting

If you are still using old “filament” bulbs or even those spiral energy-savers, you are burning money. A standard bulb uses 60W, while an LED bulb uses only 10W for the same brightness.

  • The Math: Switching 10 bulbs can save you over 500W of power every single hour they are on.

2. Kill the “Phantom Load”

Did you know your TV, DSTV decoder, and Soundbar still consume power when they are “Off” but plugged in? This is called Standby Power.

  • Tip: Use a high-quality power strip to turn off the entire entertainment center at night.

3. Fix Your Fridge Seals

Check the rubber gasket around your fridge door. If it’s loose or cracked, cold air is escaping, and the compressor has to work 2x harder to keep your food cold.

4. Iron in Bulk

The iron is one of the highest-wattage appliances in your home (often 1000W – 2000W). Heating it up uses a lot of energy.

  • Tip: Instead of ironing one shirt every morning, iron all your clothes for the week in one session.

5. Optimize Your Air Conditioner

You don’t need to set your AC to 16°C to feel cool. Setting it to 24°C or 25°C is comfortable and significantly reduces the workload on the compressor. Also, keep your windows and curtains closed to trap the cold air inside.

6. Use Your Pumping Machine Wisely

Don’t pump water every time someone washes their hands. Fill your overhead tank once a day or every two days. This reduces the high “startup current” your pump draws from the meter.

7. Defrost Your Freezer Regularly

Excess ice buildup acts as an insulator, making the cooling coils work harder. If the ice is more than a quarter-inch thick, it’s time to defrost.

8. Natural Light is Free

Open your curtains during the day! It sounds simple, but many people keep lights on in rooms that have perfectly good windows.

9. Wash Full Loads Only

If you use a washing machine, wait until you have a full load before running a cycle. The machine uses roughly the same amount of electricity whether it’s half-full or packed.

10. Invest in an Energy Audit

If your bill is still inexplicably high, you might have an “earth leakage” or a faulty appliance. At Gramowatt, we can help you perform a professional load audit to find exactly where your power is disappearing.
